Can I draw water from an upressurized water source?
Derek asks "I have a 2000 psi gas pressure washer that Iīm trying to hook up to a 55 gallon barrel as the water supply source. I cannot get the pump to prime because the manufacturer states that the supply must have a minimum of 30 psi. Do you have any suggestions on a method to allow me to do this?"
Harold: Pressure washers have a limited ability to suck water. Operating washers without a proper water supply can severely damage the washer, particularly the larger units.
The pressure seals on a washer arenīt designed to pull in water, they are meant to have pressurized water sent to them. When the unitīs plunger is forced to suck the water in, it will also take in air. This will cause the unit to stop bringing in more water (due to the air compressing and decompressing) and will eventually cause the unit to be damaged.
If you want to try using the barrel your unitīs seals must be in very good shape. You will need a high quality hose that is 5/8" or 3/4" thick. If you are using a valve in the tank use a 1/2" ball valve. If you washer doesnīt pick up the water, disconnect the water hose and start the pump. Once the pump has primed itself it should be ok unless the seals are in poor shape.
However as you mentioned you are operating the unit outside the parameters suggested by the manufacturer and are thus VOIDING THE WARRANTY. If you really wish to go ahead with this remember that your warranty is voided and if something happens to the unit you will have to pay to fix or replace it yourself.
