Pressure Washing Tips

I have seen axial pumps mentioned often. What does axial mean?
Doug Ervin asks "I am in the process of buying a pressure washer. Lowes has a Generac with Honda motor and an `axialŽ pump. What is an axial pump?"

Harold: I build a pump using a 5.5 Honda motor with a radial axial pump. What makes this pump the best on the market is the motor which has a gear reduction unit running the pump at half the motor speed, or 1750 RPM (Rotations per minute.) This increases the life of the pump many times over a unit ran at 3400 RPM.

The advantages of a radial axial pump is their simplicity, the compactness and the minimal amount of moving parts. Axial pumps have no crank shaft and instead use an offset disc that effectively moves the plungers.

When purchasing a unit you have to remember that sooner or later the seals and other parts will wear down and require replacement. Check for availability and cost of replacement parts and service.

  • What type of pump is better, radial axial or direct couple crank shaft?
  • By mistake I ran my pump without water running. How do I know if I damaged my pump?
  • What are the PROs & CONs between electric and gas models?
