Why is my pressure washer leaking oil?
Jon Young writes "I refilled oil level on pump and when I'm using the pressure washer noticed that oil seems to be leaking from either top of pressure gauge which is missing a cap or exhaust like plug directly below gauge. The pump seems to run fine, but I'm creating a film of oil below it."
Harold: There are a number of factors that could be causing your oil leak.
First, don't overfill your pump with oil. The unit should have a dip stick or oil level indicator on it. The crank shaft can touch the oil but if you overfill the pump excessive oil action will lead to oil being forced out of the crank case.
Secondly, you should check the unit for a ventilation hole that leads to the crank case. This hole is usually located in the oil fill cap or on the dip stick. If the ventilation hole is plugged the crank case becomes pressurized from the heat generated by the normal operation of the washer. Pressurizing the crank case can lead to oil leaks.
The next factor to look for is wear on the oil seals located on the plungers. The location of this type of leak shows up on the bottom of the unit between the pump and the transmission. To verify that warn oil seals are the cause of your leak remove the pump head from the transmission case and then start up the unit. Examine the oil seals as the plungers operate. Examine the oil plug and gaskets for leakage. The oil leaks might not be easy to spot unless you remove all of the grease from the unit and then watch closely for leakage.
